I didn't see the first Star Wars movie on opening day. By the time I got to see it, the film had moved from the theater to the drive-in. Though the sound from those tinny little window speakers was less than ideal, the screen was enormous, which seemed to make the movie even bigger, the jaw-dropping special effects more spectacular.

The new Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened this week and I can't wait to see it. Mostly because some of my favorite actors and characters from the first movie will return. Like Harrison Ford and Peter Mayhew as Han Solo and the lovable Chewbacca.  Not only that, the Millennium Falcon is back in all its clunky glory.

The early Internet buzz says will be the biggest Christmas movie of all time. I don't know about that. But I can't wait to see Han and Chewie in action again — aboard the Falcon. And this time in surround sound!

December 12, 2015 marks Frank Sinatra's centennial birthday. During his six-decade-plus career, he performed on more than 1,400 records and won nine Grammy Awards — bolstering my opinion that no one could swagger, swing and sing like the Chairman of the Board!

The world has been gearing up for this auspicious occasion since early this year.
  • The Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York exhibited Sinatra-inspired paintings by Peter Max in February, and an exhibition of rare Sinatra family photos in March .
  • The Grammy Museum’s exhibit “Sinatra: An American Icon” was featured at Lincoln Center from March 4 to September 4.
  • “All Or Nothing At All,” a 2-part documentary premiered on HBO in April.
  • In May, the San Francisco Giants celebrated “Frank Sinatra Tribute Night” in honor of the man who left his heart there.
  • Over the summer, Warner Brothers released a 5-film collection on Blu-Ray.
  •  In November, the 4-CD boxed set entitled “Frank Sinatra: A Voice On Air” was released, tracing the singer’s evolution with more than 100 tracks.
  • The star was feted at an over-the-top all-star gala on December 2 in — where else? — Las Vegas!
  • On December 12, Frank Sinatra Jr., backed by an entire orchestra, will perform a tribute concert honoring his legendary father with an evening of classic songs at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills — what a show that will be!
Obviously, true Sinatra-lovers can never get enough! All of this goes a long way in satisfying everyone — from long-time followers like me to people who are just now discovering the enchanting magic of Ol’ Blue Eyes.

No one ever forgets a toy that made him or her supremely happy as a child, even if that toy is replaced by one like it that is much nicer.
- Stephen King

Everyone remembers special toys from their childhood. Especially the ones that made them "supremely happy".  Looking back on it, I wish I had treated some of my toys a little more gently. The ones that survived are packed away in the attic, but there's not much "play" left in them.

But a lot of the toys I played with as a kid are still around or they're being re-released in retro versions. Which makes me supremely happy as an adult!

I'm too big for the Wonder Horse, of course, but my grandkids can still enjoy a rocking good ride. If I'm lucky, they'll be willing to share on Christmas Day. So maybe I can still box Bozo in his big red nose, make all kinds of things out of Play-Doh, spend hours doodling on a Spirograph or peer at fun pictures through the View-Master. And no matter how old or young, the classic rubber ducky is a must-have for bath time and it's THE perfect stocking stuffer.

The fact that these toys are still around speaks to their classic value — not their collectors' value, but their play value. Kids have video games and all kinds of gadgets and devices these days, but lots of them still want the classics this Christmas. Which just goes to show that our generation grew up with  the best toys EVER.
