If you were born any time during the last 100 years, you’ve heard his name & you know at least a few of his songs. For those of us who grew up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, his music features prominently in the soundtrack of our lives.

Born in Surrey, England, Eric Clapton got his first guitar at age 13 but didn’t start playing seriously until 2 years later. By age 16, he was quite accomplished, and at 17 he joined his first band. His talents became widely known through his work with bands such as The Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek & The Dominos. Clapton collaborated with other notable names, yielding some amazing work in and out of the studio with George Harrison, John Lennon, The Band, Duane Allman, Phil Collins, Leon Russell, Cyndi Lauper, Mary J. Blige, and many more.

Among his many successes are Clapton’s 18 Grammy Awards, and an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Like most successful musicians, his triumphs have been tempered by tragedies, including substance abuse, failed marriages, and the loss of a child. But through it all, the artist has produced a magnificent body of work—23 solo albums from 1970-2014, including my personal favorite, Journeyman. His fans hope to hear from him for many more years to come. Happy Birthday, Eric Clapton!
